European Union wants Cyprus to reunite

The reunification of Cyprus is primarily a matter of the two communities on the island, Valdis Dombrovskis, the EU Commission Vice President said on Monday, adding the EU is ready to assist in the context of its competencies.

Dombrovskis’ remarks came as President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci embarked on Monday on a new intensive round of talks in Mont Pelerin, Switzerland, in what has been deemed as a critical juncture for the UN-sponsored negotiations.

Referring to the Cyprus economy, he said that “Cyprus has returned to a solid economic growth and we will stress that the prudent fiscal policy should continue,” Dombrovskis said before the Eurogroup meeting earlier today.
